Athletes in education

For my genius hour project, I wish to investigate the question the relationship between male athletes and their academic achievements. The specific question I look to investigate is "how does football, baseball, and basketball participation impact high school male students' academic achievement". I wish to investigate this for a number of different reasons. One reason is because I played all three sports in high school and know first hand that it is difficult being an all year round athlete as well as trying to stay on top of one's school work. It is hard enough for young teenagers to stay focused on academics anyways because teenagers have a lot of things in their lives outside of sports such as friends, drama, hormones, and simply trying to be one of the cool kids in school. Life is hard for teenagers. The second reason I wish to pursue this question is because I want to find out where I performed among the rest of the country when discussing academic achievement. Male high school athletes in these sports may do just as well as I did, maybe worse, or maybe I was just the average male high school student athlete. The answer could be different in different regions of the country due to variables. It is all very intriguing to me.

This particular topic question is relevant for k-12 education because it is a direct relation to determine whether athletics make a positive, negative, or any impact at all in male high school student's academic achievements. Parents would probably be the most interested in a research question like this because parents always want their kids to succeed in school, so therefore they would want to know if athletics are handicapping their children academically or providing a positive impact. I personally believe as well as hypothesize that male athletics, football, baseball, and basketball, make a positive impact in their lives because students have to be academically eligible to play sports. So, in a scenario where there is a student that is incredibly gifted athletically but struggles in the classroom, athletics gives that kid a reason to do well in school because if he does not then he will not be allowed to participate in that sport until he is granted eligibility. Another individual that might be interested in this research are the principals of the schools. Principals could be curious for the same reason parents are but from their stand point, it would be more if there was a negative relation between the two. If so, then principals may try to implement more to academics such as study halls or even getting rid of athletics all together if the negative impact was great enough.

I will start my research with trying to find individuals who specialize in the field of both athletics and academics. I will try to find past articles and try to analyze statistics that relate athletes and their GPA (Grade Point Average). A few links for researching this question are the following.
